Overview of the hospital:
Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVAMC) is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level II Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary and tertiary care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry and geriatrics. The JBVAMC has active affiliations with Northwestern University Medical School and University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and Pharmacy. Over 900 University residents, interns, and students are trained each year. Pharmacy service trains over 120 students from the University of Illinois annually.
Overview of the Pharmacy Services:
Clinical Pharmacy Services at JBVAMC are provided by pharmacists employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. The Pharmacy Service employs pharmacy specialists in a variety of practice settings in both inpatient and outpatient services. Clinical pharmacists in the inpatient setting are dedicated to decentralized inpatient pharmacy services, medication reconciliation, anticoagulation, nutritional support, infectious disease, and oncology. Clinical pharmacists in the outpatient setting engage in a variety of pharmacy-managed clinics including smoking cessation, home-based primary care, pain, psychiatry, anticoagulation, hepatitis C, heart failure, geriatrics, dialysis, genitourinary, women's health, transplant medication monitoring and coordination and general medicine. Pharmacists also participate in pharmacoeconomic strategies and formulary management to promote rational, clinically appropriate, safe and cost-effective medication therapy. Clinical faculty is widely recognized for practice, teaching and research excellence. JBVAMC is a major site for clinical practice training for University of Illinois College of Pharmacy Pharm.D. Candidates.
